    Remove fb account from accounts. Do a hard reset.
    Re-add the account. This time, make sure you uncheck "sync events" before clicking "done".

    Thanks !

    Fortunately I just had to go in the options on the facebook account and switch off birthdays and sync events.
    Did not need the hard reset
