Given the high resolution of the Passport (1440 x 1440). It could "in theory" emulate the Z10 (1280 x 768) /Z30 (1280 x 720) portrait or landscape mode. The only issue I see there is when there is a "keyboard" entry, would a virtual keyboard show up? Otherwise, all the rest is pretty much the same.

    CASE 1 - Best case
Ideally, the Passport should be able to run ALL existing apps. It should run the Q10 apps automatically with pixel doubling (blurry mode) and run Z10/Z30 applications with black bars. This would be the best case because then it would work with all Amazon App store apps. The better situation is for any keyboard entry to use the physical keys instead of having a virtual keyboard pop up if it is a straight Z10/Z30 emulation.

    CASE 2- Likely Case
The less ideal mode would be that it runs only Q10 applications with pixel doubling. This could be worse if they use black bars instead with a smaller Q10 screen resolution (720x720). Not sure how many Amazon App store apps would run properly if a (1:1 ratio is needed)... but if a standard smartphone resolution is used (Z10/Z30), then most apps would work. This is something that the Q10 couldn't do due to smaller screen.

    CASE 3 - Worst Case
The worst case would require that Passport applications to be specially developed. That would really cripple the device as there wouldn't be anything developed for it yet and who knows when apps would be developed for it given the current state of developer relations. This shouldn't happen though...

    Thoughts?

You can download the development environment for 10.3 already should be able to run apps on a virtual passport So the answers are available.

Not really because I don't know if the development environment has BlackBerry World or Amazon App world to test... Remember, the emulators aren't 100%. Usually that is for actual device testing.

    Questions would be:
    - What apps can run on the Passport? Q10 only? Q10 + Z10/Z30? Passport only?
    - How would that work with Amazon App store? Special Passport only section?
    - How would they look? Pixel doubling / Black Borders?
    - How would keyboard entry look like with those apps? Would a virtual keyboard pop up (e.g. Z10/Z30) or would it automatically use the physical keyboard?

You ppl need to stop worrying about the app resolution on the passport because it's exactly the same type of post that was abundant when the z3 came out with its weird resolution. What's going to happen with the apps?
    Ever heard of auto-scaling?

Yeah sure apps will look weird as hell if it isn't done right but at worst it will simply go wide screen mode to prevent it from looking stretchy.

    Z3 doesn't have a keyboard or a 1:1 ratio screen.

Since most Android apps will have a rectangular UI will apps that display a square image like Vine show up on the Passport screen as a square image in a rectangular UI displayed on a square screen?

Most likely it depends on how it is developed. If the UI is flexible enough, it can be adaptive. However I don't believe most are. I am worried a bit since that is one of the big concerns with the Q10. Just wondering how BlackBerry is going to tackle this with the Passport.

Best advice of this thread so far.

DHabkirkDesigns BBM Channel (C0001DB0D) revealed mid-May that there is indeed other supported resolutions for apps besides 1440x1440. Notice the landscape & portrait splash screen resolutions in his screen shot:

    Questions would be:
    - What apps can run on the Passport? Q10 only? Q10 + Z10/Z30? Passport only?
All apps should be fine. Apps that specifically require 16:9 will be letterboxed either vertically or horizontally (the advantage of that 1:1 aspect ratio). That goes double for Android apps.

    - How would that work with Amazon App store? Special Passport only section?
You don't REALLY think Amazon would go to that much trouble, would you?

    - How would they look? Pixel doubling / Black Borders?
That may be left to the developer, but I'd guess that if the dev doesn't specify any changes the app will be letterboxed (what you call "black bars"). Given that the screen will be AMOLED, those "black bars" will be REALLY black and will have no light bleed, so they'll blend in really well with the black phone. (NOTE--don't know if they're doing this or not, but perhaps the letterboxing should be done with WHITE bars on the white Passport, huh?)

    - How would keyboard entry look like with those apps? Would a virtual keyboard pop up (e.g. Z10/Z30) or would it automatically use the physical keyboard?
Since the keyboard is managed within the OS itself, when apps make calls to the keyboard they'll do it directly to the device. They won't bring up some weird emulation.

    Does this help?
