Apologies if this has already been asked/answered, but I kept wondering why the keyboard looks so strange and I finally (duh!) realized that there are no numbers or special character keys. So my question: how will one type a number, or a phone number, on the physical keyboard?

Virtual keyboard pops up, check out a few pictures or videos. I don't have any links for them but Google or forum search should find plenty

That's what I was afraid of. One of the reasons I really like the 9900 or Q10 is that I don't have to use the virtual keyboards for typing if I don't want to.

I'm guessing you swipe down and then select the number or special character from additional "keys" that appear on the screen. I'm also guessing that sometimes the virtual keyboard will be context sensitive, by which I mean that if an app or website asks you to enter a phone number or other number, the number will automatically appear. Likewise with the URL bar where you may see buttons for a dot (.) and/or a button for. com. At least that's the way I imagined it. I think of it has a hybrid physical and virtual keyboard. Best of both worlds and very much a Mike L. brainchild.

I think you won't mind tapping the screen for an occasional special character. I wouldn't say the Passport requires you to type on the screen. I think 95% of the typing will be on the keyboard with an occasional tap of the screen for something special, but you shouldn't ever be tapping long strings of characters on the screen... unless, it's a very atypical application. I think you even swipe up on the keys for word prediction selection on the Passport.

OK thanks BF777. Having had the Torch 9810, Bold 9900 and Q10, I can say I like having the ability to choose to type either via a hybrid method (screen/keyboard) or all one or the other so I guess this will just require some getting used to.

This has been answered in another thread, just hunt for it (could the one titled Passport for 24h but). Swiping down pops up the numbers/symbols display on screen, which mirrors the layout of the physical keyboard. These can be entered by touching the screen or pressing the corresponding physical key.

You don't need to tap the screen. Once virtual keyboard opens up for numbers...they get mapped to hardware keys.

Thanks, illya, that's extremely helpful. Sorry if I missed it in an earlier thread.
