I have service with AT&T, yesterday the nfc icon appeared on my phone by the battery indicator. Is this related to the upcoming release of the passport? I had never seen the nfc active before.

If you did a reset or hard reset NFC sometimes comes on. When you first powered on (initial use) your Passport it was on as well. Once you turn it off it'll stay off. Trust me.

I'm on AT&T and I can turn NFC on/off in settings and the icon displays/not. Is this not the way it works normally? I *am* running a leak.

Go to Settings - Quick Settings

Look for NFC then tick the box to include it on your notification drop down menu.
