Actually this OP more closely resembles the Microsoft business model. Gates rarely wanted to first to develop anything....he strive to the second...that way the could tweak the product to avoid mistakes of the innovator.

Windows GUI (Xerox had it first), IE (Netscape or Mosaic), Surface (ipad), etc etc etc.
