I think I am going to start charging for the use of my Passport
- I thought my experiences at Tire Kingdom and AT&T were amazing. The attention the Passport got was phenomenal. But nothing tops Starbucks today.
So I am paying with my Starbucks app today and the guy behind the counter says 'oh wow. What an awesome phone.' So we chit chatted a little bit and I showed him a little around the Passport while my Machiatto was in production. He was fascinated and when his contract is up in January he wants to get one as well.
So I grab my coffee and sit down, minding my own business and two people show up. One sits next to me, one stands in front of me and both were starring at me. The one guy asked 'are you the guy with the new Blackberry?' After I confirmed that they were asking me if I can show them the Passport a little. So I did. Little bit about the hub, a little bit about the keyboard, some web browsing, text select, text suggestion etc. They both were quite impressed.
From that moment on literally every 5 minutes someone showed up to see the new 'cool' Blackberry phone. At one point I had four people sitting at my table and one lady tested the keyboard. She was impressed with the accuracy and how easy it was going from her iPhone to a keyboard. She actually send a text message to someone. I found out about it half an hour later when I got a text 'hi baby. Are you still on that phone?'
I read her messages to whoever it was telling that person how she is testing the new Blackberry and how awesome it is and that she wants one for christmas etc. She typed quite a bit in such a short time she had the Passport in her hand. Thankfully that text conversation remained g-rated.
When I left the Starbucks the barista apologized and he told me that he told almost everybody that I had that new Blackberry. He regretted that decision after a while when he saw all these people approaching me. I told him that it was no big deal (though to be honest it became a little annoying after a while and my Macchiatto was cold at the end) and I suggested to him that we could have a Blackberry Passport hour: Starbucks provides the free coffee and I provide free lessons. We both smiled and I left.
People always liked the Z10 and the Z30 but neither phone got the attention the Passport gets.10-20-14 11:57 PMLike 16 -

I absolutely love the device and it seems the public is really interested in it aswell. People are very reluctant to come back to BlackBerry or get a BlackBerry but for the first time in a long time people are taking notice to BlackBerry and at least people are considering a switch to BlackBerry because of this out of the box designed passport. I love showing my passport to everyone. I work in a place with 3000 people and most know me as the BlackBerry guy but I have so many people coming up to me daily now wanting to check out the passport and I am always happy to show them. If word of mouth for this device continues I think the future looks bright for BlackBerry again. I don't know if the the classic will continue the hype because to me it does seem like a usual BlackBerry device but with the return of the belt may keep current BlackBerry OS users from leaving BlackBerry and it can be the device to move then forward into BlackBerry 10. I think Chen mentioning a passport 2 was a smart move because this will be the device that people will look forward to when the "new" one arrives or launches. I like the BlackBerry VISA idea and perhaps that can be another revolutionary device to add with the passport. Anyways great story from the original poster and thank you for sharing.

My question why did they leave/switch was usually answered with "they fell behind". Most of them left Blackberry around 2007 with the introduction of the iPhone and in subsequent years with the rise of the Android OS.
I was trying to look back and you know they are right. For consumers or a mixed business/consumer usage the BB diehards lived until last year with OS 7. My Storm was my first OS 5 device (before that it was OS 3.something). While it was great for business use (and extremely reliable) I can actually see a lot of people just moving to a system which at that point gave them more fun and play option.
Blackberry's problem was really the lack of advertising. I out the failure of the Z10 and Z30 solely on that. A lot of people still don't know that Blackberry made to touch phones last year.
I consider myself a huge BB fan and do you know how I found out about the Z30? Crackberry.com! I read this site for years (though I only signed up recently). Without CB I would not know that there was a Z30. No advertisement by either BB or VZW. VZW did not carry it in the stores either.
Now the Passport is a game changer. Before when I used apps to pay for something my Z30 or Z10 were just another phone. Another touch phone. Nobody cared unless we got engaged in a conversion. But the Passport? Instant attention.
Though with all that being said: still no advertising. No marketing. Some magazines and blogs picked it up but the majority of marketing comes from sites like CB and the word of mouth and of course: show and tell.
I don't mind that Mr Chen wants to make a limited production and only sell to a certain clientele. He won't get the 18 year old iPhone maniac or the soccer mom who only cares about sitting at Starbucks all day and worry about her next hai appointment. But when even former BB customers look at me in disbelieve and ask "what Blackberry is still in business?" then you know they have to change. Just making a great phone and relying on word of mouth is not ennough.10-21-14 08:57 AMLike 0 - Maybe I'm the odd one out here,.. but... no one should EVER try to talk to me before I get my coffee.
Neat story though.

I also have had many people come to me asking about my Passport. 6 of them last night alone, in a restaurant. Quite a few comments such as "that's it, that's my next phone" or "I am buying one". What is fascinating, is that with minimal or no advertising at all, the majority of the people who have asked me about my phone in the last 4 days (around 25), have done it by asking me "is that the new BlackBerry". I think that is just great. There is definitely some awareness about this phone. One last thing. I boarded a plane this morning using the boarding pass on my phone. The gate agent takes the phone and says: "Oh, thank you for handing me your beautiful plasma TV!". Made my morning.
Now that is hilarious. Great comment.10-21-14 10:39 AMLike 0 -
