Iphone is dead to me, nothing really new but small dumb features I thought of myself in 2002. All other phones are meh, but today, like, the HTC's stand out and only the PASSPORT and Classic. Hate the Priv, my God. That keyboard is booboo.. can't wait for that Mercury/Rome/last keyboard phone that has been leaked.. but with the future of BlackBerry OS looking saddening for mobile devices, I have faith that it'll endure and that this Passport in my hand will last me a good 10-15 years with more than average use. What do you all think? Durable? No? Consistent when it comes to hardware? Software? Can I raise my unborn children with this Passport still intact and working like a gem? Is it that good or am I dreaming?

Just picked one up and I think it's tops. I just hope my pp lasts for a while, the keyboard is a beast and it's perfect for what I need in a cellphone.

Omg - yes, durability longevity versatility - my SE is the digital version of American Pharoah - hyperbole? Naaah truth. I'm a closet geek - have no education in code - my intro to computer programming asted 1 class - to know your subject doersnt necessarily mean you can teach. I fled that class, all those young 'uns who grew up with school computers. I'm self-taught - lots of gaps, but this I do know:
I WILL STILL BE LEARNING TO RIDE MY SILVER SE YEARS FROM NOW!!!

My biggest decision is what to do when sprint 4s croaks - where I live is literally next door to sprint tower but all those other smartphones suck bugs (oh, wait - someone mentioned HTCs - must look into them) or figure out how to boost ATT signal whose tower is 5 miles away, over hill and dale and lots of trees. Although PP signal is best when trees are leafless, iphones can't beat the BlackBerry's call quality...

So, I keep 2 phones but my fave, my darling digital device, is this here Blackberry Passport SE - it's ANAZING!!!!!

Everybody's talking about hardware manufactures wanting to build and License bb10 phones. I am sure that matters.

Sent from one of my SE Passports using BB10 superior software.

My BlackBerrys usually last a long time. I can still take the retired ones out of the box and fire them up. I only had one that actually broke and that was the 7510 track wheel.

And for conscious big dreamers like us, the Passport is the best thing since the tmobile sidekick came out.. I don't see another phone outdoing the Passport, except for maybe the last phone BlackBerry will carry out. I wouldn't mind if andriod was sideloaded, as long as they don't replicate the Priv keyboard.

In ten years, your passport will be the equivalent of a Treo 650 today. I think it's unlikely that you'll still be using it by then. If it lasts five years, and you're still using it, consider that a resounding success.

That's hard to say. Ten years is a long time for a phone with a sealed power source. I still have phones that I've used with easily replaceable batteries, but the hardware has shown some wear. Yet,the hardware on my Z10 has been solid since 2013, but I have purchased a new battery. So although the Passport SE I got a couple months back is better built, and I expect the hardware to last, the battery life will depend on your usage, but the software support is the biggest variable.
But you can get an unlocked PPSE for less than $250 with free shipping from Amazon. And if you prefer BlackBerry10, that's a hard value to pass up. Especially when some other flagship devices are going for two to three times that price.

The biggest wear item might be the battery followed by keyboards. Then screen if you break it somehow.

I don't know if the battery is standard or not and can be replaced easily. Seems most likely to be the case.

I got a like new white passport on ebay but it arrived DOA - battery - but the seller was excellent and offered to replace battery. I sent it back for full refund as I didn't weant a PP that was allegedly "like new" with dead battery. Waited six months and night the SE fro Blackberry in their spring sale. Last April.

Sooooo, there are repair services out there that can replace batteries. I still have the correspondence with the ebay seller and would defo contact them if the SE needs fixing. Can't imagine it will be all that difficult to find a BlackBerry PP repair specialist!

Plus, I'm planning on scoring good buy in new SE as backup. Will be interesting to see how long this SE lasts, but I have a 9900 Bold that's still very functional and BlackBerry has the DTEK and some final QWERTY device in the pipeline. And I think if the Classic is GSM that I could live with that one as well.

BUT my vote is for the SE Passport.

Randall - thanks but I'm just a high tech appreciate --- can't even imagine creating an app!

But I do wonder why someone can't take BB10 and improve it or something! It's a terrific OS - but also aware that I'm no expert.

I changed to Mac in Feb 2006 - only and best mac attach to have & I never looked back BUT Mavericks was the pits and froze brand new Mac a couple years ago and I'm still using 10.6.8 snow Leopard which means I'm SOL because it's no longer supported.

I'm an award-winning writer and a darn good pro-level photographer although it's my writing that pays the bills. Snow Leopard is solid and reliable but every few months I have to use the install disk to fix the HD.

I am riot into apps games etc - I enjoy my workhorse devices but they are not my toys... I wish there were people out there who could help me learn better how to keep my dinosaurs alive and well!!!

PS I just bought a second playbook - the /64GB model, brand new in the box - great tablet but abandoned by BlackBerry - crying shame!!!!

Sorry this got long and blah blah

Even built-in batteries are replaceable, usually a bit of googling finds the trick. Like a warm gun to soften the glue and then some small tools :-)

The passport's longevity will be limited by its built in battery. I would imagine that within two years people will be looking to either replace their phones or replace the battery if they want to keep using them.

I have some seriously old school hardware churning away...the oldest is a Powermac G3 Blue and White.

Sounds like your Mac needs a new hard drive...go with an SSD.

The replacement will be easier if it is a desktop.

Check out the low end mac website.

You have to try the Priv before stating its keyboard is booboo.

I tell that because as many here was reluctant to the Priv but now I am satisfied with this device.

At 1.5 yrs. My Passport battery is going about a half a business day before needing a charge. Granted, I am a heavy user, but the phone will force me to buy something else before the hardware / software is obsolete.

I think the OS will be supported for another two years tops. After that, BlackBerry will encourage users to move to another device.

Usually it's about soldering the terminal points. I have not mastered soldering yet. I can take the thing about just fine.

By the way, I was using 10-year-old Thinkpads until about a year ago when I switched to the Surface Pro 3/Surface 3. The old Thinkpads STILL are awesome devices when you put in SSDs and max out the RAM. Great keyboards and ergonomics and screens as long as the resolution is high enough. (They liked to use low-res screens on lots of their devices for old men executives that liked big icons, etc.)

To make the old Thinkpads useful, I had to learn to do simple stuff to them. Sometimes for fun I would strip them down and change the CPU or upgrade the CPU fan, etc.

My point is that we might be able to repair our Passports as they break and use them long term. I guess the difference might be that you can run Windows 7 on an old laptop giving you access to a standard OS that is constantly being updated. Not the same with BB10.
