Pretty simple question here.

I have been typing with my hands really low holding the phone, but if I support the phone with both of my index fingers towards the top when typing longer messages, it seems more comfortable.

Ya I keep my fingers about half the way up and so far it's been pretty good.

I type in a similar way. Except my hands are bit smaller so my index fingers are about 3/4 the way up and support the back.

I've been doing it like the OP I think, where I keep my index fingers holding each side of the frame, and rest the bottom of the Passport on my pinkies.

On thing I've noticed.. before on my Q10, I would cross sides to type, you know how the grooves on the right and left sides of the keyboards were shaped differently, with the space between T and Y, G and H, and V and B being the center?

With the Passport, due to the width, I think... my right thumb doesn't feel right going all the way over to hit T and G, and my left thumb doesn't feel right going over to hit H and Y... and of course because of the spacebar's placement, hitting B and V with the opposite side's hand is too hard.

I'm really happy with how easy and fluid it is to type on this phone. I was expecting a much steeper learning curve.
