there is no sound or anything else to indicate when my Blackberry Passport is ringing. where do I go to turn it back on?

Settings: Notifications, check the volume level for your Normal Profile and make sure it is the Active Profile.

You can easily switch between Normal and a quiet profile by putting Notifications in your Quick Menu Settings (swipe down from the top of your home screen to see what you have there).
