Been trying to figure this out and I haven't been able to do it on own. Is there a way I can dial numbers without the area code? I keep getting a message saying the area I'm in requires the area code.

I tried using the smart dialing and set it up as 123, then I dial 456-7890. But it doesn't work. The call goes through if i dial 123-456-7890, but I don't want to dial the area code every time. Smart dialing works for phone I have as contacts in phone book, but what about random numbers I haven't added?

Telephone systems used to let you leave out the area code and even the exchange in some locations, but I think those days are long gone.

I thought that was what smart dialing was suppose to fix Well, I guess if it isn't possible anymore

I kind of figured I was doing it wrong so it wasn't working

Of course, as a last resort, we could read the instructions, just in case that helps:
Tap The Settings icon > Smart Dialing.
To change the default country code, tap Country Code. Tap a country.
To change the default area code, in the Area Code field, type an area code.
Tap any of the drop-down lists to change other smart dialing options.

But then as you've indicated, that only seems to work with existing Contacts.

yeah I tried the manual, was wondering if I was doing it wrong because it only worked with contacts and not unknown/new numbers
