Is there any way to make the date on your home screen brighter or make it black? If I have a light wallpaper I can not see it..

Nope. You cannot customize it.

tp is right, but don't use the home screen and have your calendar in the upper right or left on your main screen and all is good. I stopped using the home screen, seemed like a waste of time.

Ok so let's say I put my business card app on the home screen to get rid of the date, will it eat away at my battery performance since the app is always open?
