I was wondering if hotspot is better than tethering and has anyone been able to get either and still keep there unlimited data

Nope. I had to give up ulimited to get the Hotspot. Worthy trade in my estimation given how much I use the Hotspot feature.

I never tried Hotspot but I still have my unlimited plan with ATT. They start to throttle around 10 gigs though.

I thought AT&T throttled after 5GB; which really isn't much.

My mother has AT&T unlimited data and I've tried to convince her that she is overpaying and doesn't need it anyway (with WiFi she only uses a few gigs a month).

I used to have unlimited data with Verizon until the Passport arrived lol. Wasn't sure about using my Passport as a hotspot on AT&T. Seems like I can without extra charges unless going over data limit of course.

Nice to know in case I ever need to use it.

Unlimited plan here. No hotspot - the setup won't even let you get very far without a message pop up that tells you that you need a different plan and to call the carrier.

For some reason, I was able to get through the initial tethering setup right after loading up 10.3.1.2744 (before, it showed the same plan incompatibility message as the one for hotspot). But then I turned it off, never trying it out for fear that AT&T will pick up on it and automatically switch me to a tiered plan and I loose my unlimited plan - they have been known to do that.

I don't often use more than about 1.5 to 2 Gb in a month, but there have been occasions when I hit almost 5. Once, I came close and got the text warning that they might start throttling. It never happened as I reached the next month's cycle a few days later. Still, it's nice to know I'll never be charged for it even if I do go over.

If I were to drop to a 3Gb plan, I'd pay $10 more than I do now at $30 a month for unlimited. And get hit with an overage charge on top of that if I do go over.

And, so far I have yet to find a need for hotspot or tethering.

I've had my unlimited data plan for as long as I can remember. Because of this, I don't have the ability to use Hotspot and Tethering and am fine with it. The only time I had an issue was a few years ago when I tried to use Video Calling on BBM and was informed I won't be able to due to my unlimited plan. I called CS and argued with the rep what bull it is to no avail. I got a snarky comment, "Can you imagine if we allowed Hotspot for all our unlimited data plan customers?!" I gave her a few choice words/phrases and that was the end of it. Friends and family don't use Blackberry or BBM, so I don't have an issue. But, at the time, believe me, I was so pissed.

I probably don't use enough data because of Wifi but am happy with my unlimited data/text plan and don't plan on changing it.

You should have told her Verizon allows unlimited Hotspot and doesn't limit what applications can use data. Verizon ftw

    Yeah, no.

We're talking about making the phone a hot spot for other devices to connect to - you know, while the phone is on mobile data, and other non-mobile enabled devices (like a tablet, laptop or handheld gaming device) can connect to the internet through your phone when there is no wi-fi available. For example, taking a trip with the family in a car.

Nobody cares if you threaten to go to another provider. It's all the same stuff, slightly different coverage concentrations, and outsourced support. If you're going to leave a company, just DO IT. People sound like children crying that they're going to take their ball and leave. You should never have loyalty to a corporation, because the people that work under it aren't permitted to reward much of anything.

Wasn't implying to state that as a threat to cancel, just as an answer to the reps question of "can you imagine what would happen if we allowed unlimited hotspot". The answer is nothing bad and happy customers since that is what Verizon does.

You forget that all ISPs are cheap, and always oversell the limited bandwidth they buy from larger service providers that only sell in bulk to major ISPs. If everybody had unlimited tethering with no throttling, and actually did something with it, everything would grind to a halt. Imagine if everybody decided to go somewhere at the same time right as you were going out to your car to head to work.

The worst part is, the cost of the data purchased by ISPs has dropped sharply in the past decade, while the amount resold to individuals and businesses keeps diminishing. The prices keep going up, of course. I mean, fifteen years ago, in the same city, with the same ISP, I had a 64Mbit connection that was 64Mb down AND up. Paid barely $40 a month for it. Now if I want half of that, I have to pay $280, and the upstream is absolute trash. Yeah, I want to spend five days uploading a heavily-compressed video. Everyone gotta' have their Netflix, though.

I just got the text from AT&T saying that I am at 75% of 5gb and maybe throttled in high data traffic areas...wth! I thought after they were fined by the FCC that this would go away.

I think they are fighting that fine, and probably going on "business as usual" mode until they exhaust all of their appeals.

No they still very much throttle. It's what makes unlimited data no longer worth it. You have 5 gigs at full speed and the rest capped.

Everyone acts like no other provider throttles. You home ISP will start doing that soon, if they don't already, but you might not notice it when certain legislation passes.

Anyway, here's a trick that may work. I gave up unlimited data a long time ago, because anything that requires a lot of data, I tend to use with my desktop, so I can't test it myself. Go to your online account, and try switching from visual voicemail, to standard voicemail. Wait a few minutes, then change it back to visual voicemail. Power your phone off, wait two minutes, then power your phone back on and test browsing. See if your speed is back to normal.

you're saying this is a workaround to get back normal speeds after being throttled? and supposedly ISPs will not be doing this because of new net neutrality laws, however that is being implemented..

Your voicemail type is attached directly to your data service. Changing it around resets more than you think.

Also when TPP passes (thanks to TPA removing the two-thirds majority requirement), casual pirates will be banned from their ISPs pretty fast, or fined into suicide. It's almost funny that Warner Brothers is in on this, when they were pushing their internet service for years with DOWNLOAD MOVIES AND MUSIC FASTER THAN EVER WITH TIME WARNER HIGH SPEED INTERNET advertisements. Yeah, they were doing this before it was legal to watch TV shows and movies online. What kind of movies were they expecting people to download?
