I don't use my phone for video much but I do watch netflix some on my tablet.

I watch some older TV shows in 4x3 format and I wondered how that would be on the passport.
I would think it would be about the same as a 16x9 screen in terms of the amount of wasted space. The difference being that a wide screen would have bars at the side and the square on the bottom.

For 4:3 content about 1/3 of the vertical screen space will be black bars. Split in two that's 1/6 on the top and 1/6 on the bottom. For 16:9, about 2/3 of the screen will be black bars, which means 1/3 on the top and 1/3 on the bottom, double that of 4:3 content. Passport screen is actually reasonably well suited for watching 4:3 content. Not so much for 16:9.

I understand that, though thanks for pointless out the numbers. Should have though about that.

I was asking about watching 4x3 video on a passport vs a typical screen like an iPhone.

It would seem to me that it would be similar, just that the bars would be in different places.

Correct, and in fact 4:3 video would look better on the Passport. Less letterboxing.

So, you can crop with Netflix? I have really wanted that feature.

That's a really severe crop though. Almost 2/3 of the video are cropped. In 10.3.1 you have more aspect change options for Android apps that allow running Netflix without the massive cropping. If the cropping was to 4:3, I would not mind it, but it's not. A lot of the video is lost.

That isn't true. Less that half would be cropped from a 16x9.

16x8 would be half so for 2/3 of the video to be cropped the aspect ratio would need to be something like 15x5.
