    Default 1x1 ratio rationale???

Passport looks an awesome device yet I keep thinking on the rationale of the 1x1 screene ratio especially when getting beyond the Q10 screen size? Is it some ergonomics that I don't get?

I think it's not by chance that the rectangular form has evolved and survived over thousands of years when it's about reading text. Golden ratio and golden rectangles are proven standards in page sizes, painting sizes, photography, architecture.

    What's with the square?

When the Z30 keyboard pops up, there is no much screen left. The result is a 1:1 window, above the virtual keyboard!

You absolutely nailed it. The virtual keyboard takes up the rest and you are left with a 1:1 area anyway. The 16:9 does make a difference when you play games or view multimedia (keyboard hidden), but since the Passport is first and foremost a business orientated device, it makes perfect sense.

Agree. However, with 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches, the "portrait mode" on the Passport is about the same as the landscape mode on the Z10. The video will display the same actual physical dimensions (give or take) in "portrait" on the Passport as it would in landscape mode on the Z10. Perhaps somebody can do a mock-up.

That doesnt make any sense. Just because that is what remains on the Z30, doesnt mean that a qwerty phone should follow that scheme. Thats a limitation of full touch devices: the virtual keyboard takes up screen space. You could easily have a physical keyboard beneath a 4:3 ratio screen and it would not be too top heavy, especially if there is no toolbelt and a 3 row keyboard like the Passport device. Any video can be reasonable viewed in a 4:3 ratio, but a 1:1 cuts off too much for it to be acceptable. Also a rectangular screen is much better for scrolling thru lists and feeds. The phone would never need to be turned to landscape view except for watching videos or playing games that need that extra space.

There has to be some other rationale for the 1:1 choice. And id love to know what it is.

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/16:9

In 2008 the computer industry started switching to 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for monitors and laptops. A 2008 report by DisplaySearch cited a number of reasons for this shift, including the ability for PC and monitor manufacturers to expand their product ranges by offering products with wider screens and higher resolutions, helping consumers to more easily adopt such products and "stimulating the growth of the notebook PC and LCD monitor market.[5]

In 2011 Bennie Budler, product manager of IT products at Samsung South Africa, confirmed that monitors capable of 1920 x 1200 resolutions aren't being manufactured anymore. It is all about reducing manufacturing costs. The new 16:9 aspect ratio panels are more cost effective to manufacture locally than the previous 16:10 panels.[6] Since computer displays are advertised by their diagonal measure, for monitors with the same display area, a wide screen monitor will have a larger diagonal measure, thus sounding more impressive. Within limits, the amount of information that can be displayed, and the cost of the monitor depend more on area than on diagonal measure.

In March 2011 the 16:9 resolution 1920 x1080 became the most common used resolution among Steam's users. The earlier most common resolution was 1680 x1050 (16:10).[7]

it might be hard to type one handed I fear....

but that 1:1 screen is much better to watch mails, powerpoint presentations, PDF´s and other business stuff. This is a phone for busy people like Jonh Chen, people that don´t have time to watch netflix or play flappybird.

this kind o screen with more horizontal real estate is going to greatly reduce the need to zoom into read text.

Read the UTB blog. Phone can be turned sideways, and you can use the keyboard to scroll up/down on a webpage (or document), without touching the screen - so great for reading. So there's one reason to turn the phone sideways - less fingerprints from navigation.

As for the 1:1 rationale - on a Q10/5, the screen size is way too small. For media it is no good, & also limits app selection, since it cannot display a 16:9 game & it be usable.

As for the 1:1 screen on something this large, it could reasonably display a usable 16:9 app & the video would only be slightly less than a landscape iPhone. Then there are the rumors of it being able to display two apps at once, which... must be two 16:9 apps portrait or landscape on the screen @ the same time. We'll see if those hold true...

Umm, I believe that's 4.5" diagonally, which makes 3.18 to the side.

I still believe it is the "top heavy" thing, however. The passport is no taller than its brethren, and will not stick up too much out of your pocket.
I suppose they also don't have to add another (3:4) { EDIT: form factor display aspect ratio }, for developers to take into account...

yeah... and this new keyboard is very close to the lower edge of the phone, that is more prone to feel the phone top heavy

Yes mate. The Passport is about 8.0772 centimeters (3.18 inches) square and the height of the Z10 display is just about 3.5 inches (about 9cm). Not much in it....

One of the reasons I bought an iPad was the 4:3 ratio. It is more comfortable for reading as it is the shape of a book. My old Asus was like that too. My new laptop is 16:9. I don't like it as much because you really get less of the web page on the screen and have to scroll more, even though the screen is larger. Don't know if I explained that clearly :-)

Also my personal preference (4:3) but the world has moved on to 16:9 and it makes no sense to me - I'm in the minority here, so nobody cares.

It depends.... your vision\brain work more in horizontal manner, so for movies amd games, the 16:9 is a more natural format for your vision, but to look at pages yeah, 4:3 is better.

Um I was reading in another thread that if you turn the passport to the side you can use the keyboard to scroll, after double tapping it. The 1 x 1 makes sense then because the orientation of the phone will not matter. Excluding media stuff.

Apparently they're expecting people to "scroll" with the keyboard. Excited to use one to see how useful this is.
