Am using Google Maps right now and I find it cumbersome to use and at times a bit slow.

    Is there anything better?

Telenav and Garmin Mobile. You have to pay to play. Never been a fan of the VZ Navigator interface...
As I have subscriptions to all three, I have found Telenav via AT&T Navigator to provide the most accurate results...

I've always been a big user of Google Maps. Every now and then I use BB Maps...

That sounds more like GPS, which isnt what I am looking for.
Just maps, with basic directions (walking, public transport, etc.)

You do not have to use any of the GPS-enabled applications as a GPS device. They can all be used to provide basic 2D map services with routing and direction information, including pedestrian mode support.

Check out BB Traffic. It's a free RIM app. It doesn't show directions on a map, but will give you written and voice turn-by-turn, etc.
