The instructions to install an OS often say to finish the update process with a physical battery pull and letting it sit for a couple minutes before putting it back in. What is the difference between doing this and doing a "soft reset" as per QuickPull? Does the software reset leave something behind that the physical battery pull takes care of?

No quickpull imitates a battery pull.

Quickpull for most purposes is just like physically pulling the battery. It's a full reset of the device. The instructions you are referring to say to do a battery pull and leave the battery out for a few minutes before rebooting. This I believe is to give the system a chance to completely clear the RAM/cache. Quickpull cannot simulate this, it restarts immediately.

Is it necessary to do that step as described? I've never needed to, but others swear by it, so YMMV.
