New Storm owner. Themes/Apps recommendations?

Alright guys,

First off let me start by saying that I have been a long time lurker on this forum and it is truly a database of knowledge.

I recently switched to a Storm 2 from the Bold 9650. I am with Verizon Wireless. They gave me the switch with the option to return to the bold if I wish. I want to try out the storm and see if I like it!!!

Anyways I need a few things, thats why I'm posting here :P

Themes:

I've been looking at themes for the past few days. I can't really find one that I like!!!

I want a theme with the OS6 icons, and I want it simple and CLEANNNN. I love clean organized themes that look professional. Some of the ones that I liked (but dont have the OS6 icons I like) are:

I dont need all these neat features where you touch a part of the screen and open a hidden application... Just a simple theme, with OS6 icons, maybe one dock at the bottom with 4 or 5 icons... a nice wallpaper, and maybe a weather app... you know?

If you guys could recommend a theme like that I would really appreciate it... as well as how to install it (I have a mac so everything becomes more complicated)

Operating Systems:

Well... as I just said, I have a Mac.. and no access to a P.C. I was wondering whether it would be possible to upgrade to the latest NON VERIZON (I hate branded phones) OS... and how I could do it? I used to be a windows user but with a mac I'm so confused on how to function with my bb..

Applications:

I know berryweather is a must, and GMAIL, and Opera.

I was wondering if you guys had some other recommendations of apps that you find extreeemeellyyy cool on the Storm... I was thinking of CrunchSMS (Looks pretty cool), and maybe the disco lights application? haha

Haha I must admit I was expecting a little more responses. No one has anything productive to say?!!?!

As for the theme posted above, I'm not sure I like it. As I said - I like clean themes. This theme clutters up the screen with the huge weather in the middle. I'm not blind - I can see the weather in the top right/left... not in the middle of the screen pretty much putting to waste a beautiful screen such as the storms'.

Plus the icons are not OS6

You are absolutely insane.

First of all, as of current situation, STORM2 isn't getting OS6 unless RIM give it to us. So you must have like the STORM2 alot to trade it with your 9650 which is going to get OS6.

Secondly, if you want OS6 icon so much, then please kindly wait for theme maker to create a super fake OS6 theme that look so much as the real OS6. As much as theme maker tries, the fake OS6 theme will never be totally same as the real thing. Your are just having an illusion. Maybe you end up complaining your S2 running sluggish, icons are nice but missing features etc.

Thirdly, you question on loading other carrier OS and apps. There is so many threads in this forum with step by step guides. Obviously you wanted to be spoon feed.

Lastly, from what I see, you are going to be another self-inflict S2 problem owner. Kindly note your S2 is a CDMA phone, not any other GSM phone. I don't understand what special benefits do you get when you load it with another carrier OS release since you are on Verizon plan???

Now you said you like your S2 but on the long run. You are going to turn your S2 into something which you hope and want it to be but it was never meant to be that way.

My advice to you. Be content with what you have and learn to appreciate the way S2 operate.

i'll change your thread title to something more descriptive. Usually a descriptive title yields better results. Here's a bump too.

You might want to look through the Storm Theme section of CrackBerry and see what appeals to you and try a few out. That's how many of us find that perfect theme. Also search the Storm section for app recommendations. There's MANY threads to help you get a start.

Check out the BlackBerry 101 How-To Lecture Series ! This will help you with the basics such as installing 3rd party apps, upgrading/downgrading/reloading your OS, intalling themes, keyboard shortcuts, email basics.
It's also a good idea to browse the forums and read as much as possible. Many questions you have are answered there already!

Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.

I did not ask for your opinion in my choosing to try out the Storm 2. If you have nothing productive to input to this thread then by all means move to the next one. I didn't post on here to hear your incessant blabbering.

Just for the record. Verizon Wireless told me that if I wish to switch to the Bold within the next few months, they will, at no charge, replace the phone for me. Oh, and by the way - this Storm 2 trial was free of charge as well.

I dont understand why you would flame me when I just wanted to try out a new phone for a bit and see if I like it or not - so much for constructive criticism eh?

Mod, thank you for your post and the switching of the name. I read all of those articles you gave me however I think you misread my post. I have a Mac. I don't even know how to delete the vendor file so I was posting to see if anyone had a guide for mac's as well.

As for the theme. I dont want anything other than the OS6 icons. How would that make my Storm 2 perform worse? All I want is a simple theme with OS6 icons. That's it. Did no one make anything like that yet? (I cant find it on the Themes page and I went through maybe like 30 pages).

Hopefully others will come along to give you more specific advice. i have a Tour. i actually would rather a Storm over the Bold at this point.

This is insane!!! You have the storm2 just came on trial and you are trying to squeeze and change the storm2 within your trial period. You don't even learn to appreciate the original storm2 yet.

Are you willing to pay for it? 5 bucks? 10bucks?

I hope you won't brick the S2 during your trial and if you do brick it, i hope they will allow you to replace it or swop back to the bold.

OP, the official OS6 icons just got released. Be patient as I know there are several theme makers working on themes with the OS6 icons. Themes take a lot of man hours to produce.

Until then feel free to try out some other themes here in the forums or at themesinmotion.com. You might just find something you like.

Also try searching the mobihand store for apps.

Oh yes, definitely feel a lot better. Had a rough week hearing pp trying to load android OS into S2, loading OS6 into S2, some even think they successfully install OS6 into S2 while its just a theme, now we have someone wanted only OS6 icon in S2. Its a good thing no one ask if they can load IOS4 into S2. Or they did?

I never thought my posting would bring so much people to disarray...

So as of now there is no theme with the OS6 icons. Thats ok - all you needed to do was say that. Legolus - I looked at your theme and it's very nice, however I was looking for something very specific! If I change my mind I will most def. be installing yours.

Thank you again for your control over this thread. I read the mac tutorial, doesn't really offer anything special. For example - if I wanted to install a theme on my tour, how would I go about doing it on a mac? Some little things get so complicated.

The best advice I can give you for your mac is either come up with a Windows laptop for your BB stuff or use Bootcamp to put Windows on your Mac. I believe that is what most the Mac users here do. While they are working on it, Macs and BBs don't work real well together.

As far as themes and apps, the majority of them can be loaded OTA (over the air) directly from your BB browser, so a computer is not even needed. I only use my PC for OS loaded and backing up my BB.

I just installed the BB 5.9 theme and like it a lot. My main apps are BerryBuzz, BerryWeather, MeterBerry, Opera Mini, Garmin Mobile, QL, SXM and Pod Trapper. I also run a hybrid OS which helps the experience tremendously.

Just looked at both BBredux and 5.9 themes...

With respect to 5.9 - It looks cool and all but alot of ppl are complaining of memory leaks and what not and I dont want that kind of trouble, especially since it's a trial phone (might influence my choice to keep, etc)

With respect to BBredux - looks like a very very solid theme! Just a few things that are bugging me...

- Inability to customize the MAIN icons? What's up with that? I like the whole idea but at least let me customize what apps I want on my home screen..

- Battery/Signal bars are too "modern" for me... I'm an old fashioned guy

- I hate scrolling screens. Gets too confusing.

It looks like for now I am just going to stick with the standard BB theme out of the box... I'm going to customize it to just 1 row, 4 icons.. CrunchSMS, BBM, Mail, and Webbrowser. That's all I need.

As for apps, could you please list what you have and what it does? everyone is just throwing app names at me.. I'd like to syphon down my results by the description.

I feel your pain. I'm fairly picky about how I want my themes to look. Never could find just the right one, so I started creating them myself. You can make the experience as easy or as difficult as you'd like depending on how detail you want to get with your themes. Ton of threads out there to explain how to do it. With that said, I have a couple that may be what you are looking for. Unfortunately, I've never published them (i.e. have never looked into messing with an OTA source), so all I would have available for you would need to be installed via Desktop manager. I'll throw a couple screen shots up and you can take a look. If you want a copy, PM me and I'll shoot you the *.alx and *.cod files.

Try the five point nine theme. Has OS6 icons and is very nice. Its the latest theme that I put on my Storm2.
