my device says i only have 32mb of the 128mb of application memory, but i have no applications even installed. Just the blackberry app world. I recently got a replacement phone becuase my old one cracked out. At least on that one i had the FB app and a blink app. What is taking up the space?

The OS also takes up application memory.

What device do you have? What OS is installed on the device? If you had 4.6 on your old device, that took less memory than 5.0.

You might want to shrink your OS to free up memory. http://forums.crackberry.com/f132/how-shrink-os-348769/

If you have a device with 128mb and have 32mb free, you are not doing too bad. My friends 9000 has only 18mb free after a reboot. But she does have 8-12 apps installed. If I remember correctly she had about 36mb free without anything installed with os5 installed.

Does your device have a camera? And have you taken pictures with it? If you don't have an SD card installed, then all photos are stored in the device memory too, taking up even more of the "application memory".

i have the 9000, v4.6.0.304 installed. i have about 5 pics on it, and no video, i even deleted the two demo videos that came on it. device memory has free space of 845.2 out of 859.2, so i have plenty there... just app memory is low. so if the os takes up that much space, basically you are telling me if i want any kind of apps, i better get a card - huh? that is stupid, but whatever. just one more thing i dont like about the bb. speaking of... will this help with viewing internet? about everytime i try to go to a site... even a small one like parenting.com, i get a message "HTTP Erro 413: Request entity Too large, the page you requested could not be loaded. Please try loading a different page." Very frustrating.

You cannot install applications on the Media Card. They must be installed on the Device Memory.

For clarity I changed the thread title from "Out of application memory" to "Low
    application memory."

32mb is low. 0 is out of.

What does this tell me? For instance, mine says the total size is 1531.6K. Does that mean all the individual items added up equal that, or is that the maximum allowable amount?

It means that that is the total amount of space those items consume. If it
is showing 1.5mb (1531.6kb) that is the amount of memory required to hold
    those items.

Very little in the BB OS details the maximum allowable. The Event Log only
allows 400kb max. You'll never see that reported that on the device.
