Is there a way to tell which apps are currently running? In other words, how do I tell that everything is OK for minimum battery usage?

Doesn't that always show some icons no matter what's running?

Yes. You will always have 5 things running. Anything above those core 5 are ones you can turn off.

How do you close them if they are more than 5 and open? Do you just hit 'blackberry button' and then select 'close'?

4 on the Bold, no PTT.

Choose the app and when you go into the ensure you are pressing the menu key and then selecting "exit/close"

Also the four that are up at all times are: Phone, Browser, BBM & Messages. The home is there, but it isn't an app.

I have my left key set as "application switcher"

It shows which apps are running and can easily switch to that app and use/close it.
