I had the problem that many people spoke of which showed 6 apps running (specifically the applications center icon) at any given time when only 5 are required.
I hooked up the phone to the desktop manager and uninstalled the applications center application and it was gone. I plan on putting it back on soon because I know it will become more useful in the future, but that fixed the problem as far as getting rid of the icon.
Maybe someone can test and see if it is back to normal once you reinstall the app?
