I downloaded the BB Weather app from here. When I go to my downloads to run it, as soon as I click it, it freezes my phone. I cant exit out and only thing I can do is shut it off.

I deleted and re-installed and did the same thing.

So I tried the WeatherBug download. This one downloads and when I go to open it, it asks "Do you want to set your location according to your GPS blah blah?" It lets me move over Yes or No but wont select or let me close out.

    What am I doing wrong?

Are you using an employer-provided phone? Are you a BES user with an IT Policy that prohibits installing 3rd party software?

Alright, done the battery pull. Same thing happens when I DL the WeatherBug. It opens, goes to asking if I would like to enable my GPS location and thats all, freezes on that screen.

Do you have BBMaps installed? Does the GPS work with it? Are you using the OS that came with the phone, or have you upgraded it?

Go to Options / Advanced Options / GPS. Do you have GPS Services "Location On" and Location Aiding "Enabled"?

Thanks. It was set to 911 only. Do I need to change it?

Yes. "911 only" doesn't allow other GPS apps to use it. Set it to "Location On" and if "Location Aiding" is an option, enable it.

Hmm, it sounds like your GPS isn't working. When I asked earlier about BBMaps, you said you were using Google Maps and that it worked. However, Google Maps may be working in cell tower mode rather than using your GPS. In Google Maps, when you press 0 for My Location, do you get a small blue dot and a location within 10-m or less, or do you get a blue circle and a location within 1700-m, or something similar?

I get the blue dot with "Your location within 4000 meters."

That confirms it. Google Maps isn't using your internal GPS. And nothing else appears to be able to, either. I confirmed from RIM's website that the 8530 does have an internal GPS (the 8520 does not). It appears that Verizon is disabling the GPS in the 8530 in the same way they disabled the internal GPS in the 8330 and 8830. That's unfortunate. The Tour and Storm use a different GPS chip that Verizon either cannot or does not block. If my supposition is correct, then all you can do is buy an external GPS puck. There are a couple of models sold in the CrackBerry store. I used a Freedom Keychain 2000 with my Verizon 8830.

Well thats just crap on Verizons part. They shouldn't market it with "GPS" without saying how it doesnt really work accordingly.

Thank you so much for your help JeffH. I will look into your suggestion.

Before you spend money on a GPS, talk to Verizon's Customer Service. Ask them about the GPS. Ask them specifically if it is autonomous GPS that works with third party apps in the same way as the GPS in the Storm and the Tour, or if it is assisted GPS that will only work with VZNav and BBMaps. BTW, you should install BBMaps. If it works with the internal GPS, that's consistent with how Verizon treats the 8330 and 8830.
