My question stems from the fact that in the case that your phone is unpassworded when stolen, the person can easily uninstall Protect and circumvent all the security it provides. Does anyone know if the security features still work when Protect is uninstalled?

If so, is there a way to prevent the uninstall?

Nope protect needs BB ID to register and back up data.

The remote features will only work when the app is installed.

    What is BlackBerry Protect?

BlackBerry Protect automatically backs up important data from your BlackBerry smartphone. If your smartphone is ever lost or stolen, you can use BlackBerry Protect to recover your data and remotely lock your smartphone or delete data from your smartphone.

    Remote Backup and Restore

Back up your data automatically and restore it to any BlackBerry smartphone. With BlackBerry Protect, you can back up:

    Contacts
    Calendars
    Tasks
    Memos
    Browser Bookmarks
    Text Messages

If you're running BlackBerry 7 OS, you'll notice BlackBerry Protect is no longer a separate app that is in App World; it is now integrated as part of the OS. When you open Protect, if you go into Menu>Options, you can check "Prevent Delete of BlackBerry Protect." This way, it cannot be deleted using Menu>Delete from the home screen or from within Application Management. Could someone who knew enough use BBSAK or some other way to delete it? Possibly. But most people who would end up with a lost or stolen phone wouldn't have any idea how to delete it. (And, as usual, common sense applies: a password on your BlackBerry prevents 95% of security problems).
