What would you guys recommend as the 'best' application for recovering a lost phone... features such as locating the phone... wiping on command etc should be available.

Check out SmrtGuard... it works with GPS for locating, remote wipe, remote lock, plus they have a feature for remote listening, and backing up of emails, address book, etc.

Anything that offers similar features for just a one off payment rather than a monthly/yearly fee?

None that I've seen... but by all means use Google to search around the web.

I take that back, it's not free, you get a 30 day free trial and then have to pay $3/month

    What about something like this:
Cell Seeker - Communication & Internet BlackBerry Apps - Crackberry BlackBerry Software Store

Looks good although it doesn't have any of the wiping features... not really a problem for me though as the phone is password protected.

SmrtGuard is the best, I'm sure they remind you to pay yearly.
