I have had the Storm for almost a week now and today was the first time plugging the device in to my PC. I found an upgrade 'blackberry 4.7 core apps' and tried to install. It says install sucessfully completed, but when I recheck for updates, the core apps is still in the list. It is 22mb(?)-- is it worth doing? This is not the same update that was leaked for the OS is it?

Nope, not the same as the leaked OS. If you download and install the leaked OS then it will prompt you to install it, otherwise your just reinstalling the Core OS for 4.7.0.65 (revision .82)
