Sure. Make sure you have the current version of DM. Connect your phone via USB to your PC. Click on Backup/Restore in DM. Click on Backup. (I save to my Desktop because I'm lazy and it's easy to find there). Proceed. Acknowledge completion. Exit out, close DM, proceed with OS upgrade. After the upgrade relaunch DM, BU/Restore -> Advanced. Load your *.ipd backup file in the left panel. Your current DBs are in the right panel. Select the specific DBs from your backup you want to restore, click arrow, yes, move on to the next. I do messages, calendar-all, sms messages, and that's about it (contacts are synced).
