One of the things I find frustrating about the BB fb app is that you can not select and copy text within the app. Why is this?

My gues will be the limmitation fb has created in the app.
all the app's in the various OS (ios android) has limitation. I thing it's a sucurity thing.

Just go to the mobile site when you want to copy text.

Menu button > Go to Mobile Site

Maybe, but you can copy paste from the mobile site, so I guess I don't understand the security thing. Also, I'm pretty sure RIM developed it, not fb.

RIM did develop it. You could always join the beta zone and request this feature. The application Imo is coming along nicely.
