PLEASE HELP! "not an active BB subcriber"???

I have the curve 8900 and am trying to upgrade to 5.0 software and it tells me "not an active blackberry subcriber" what does this mean and how do I become one? I do NOT have a data plan as I had my BB before it was mandated and shouldn't need a data plan to update software. I am really frustrated and at&t & blackberry technical support don't seem to help me. Thanks-Crystal

It's changed. You need to have an active data plan. This was implemented by RIM not by AT&T.
