Default OS upgrade without SIM?

I was due an upgrade from my service provider (O2) and I decided to stay with the 9000 as the rumoured and much discussed replacement may still be a year away. So I received my new Bold 9000 and decided to load OS 5.0 and then store it until my current 9000 becomes frazzled or otherwise unuseable.

I didn't want to swap the SIM from its current device onto the new one just to upload the OS (concerns about the service provider being confused with the different device PIN) and so tried to do it using BBSAK.

I have successfully uploaded VS 5.0 onto my old 9000 using BBSAK's excellent 'Load OS' facility. But this clearly doesn't work with the replacement and SIMless 9000 as the AppLoader can't 'see' the new OS on my hard-drive (I have made sure that the 'vendor' file has been deleted by the way).
So my question is, can an OS be loaded on a 9000 without a SIM card inserted or am I missing something here?

Other things are happening here. You do NOT need a sim in the phone to process an OS upgrade. I still update the OS in my Rogers Bold even though I dont have a SIM in it anymore.

I too have loaded an OS (.509) without the sim. Did you try and wipe the old one first using BBSAK?

I was about to post a new thread and i found this one... It clearly seems that when we don't have a SIM card in, we can't. A friend who have an iPhone give me his 9000 to upgrade, so no SIM is inserted and for the latest OS leaks, it tells me that i need to have a blackberry plan... ANy solutions ?
