Help - Updating OS issue
Hi,
I am trying to update my operating system from v4.5.0.180 to v4.5.0.187, that can be found on the RIM website under O2 UK.
I have downloaded the new OS file and followed RIM's instructions to start desktop manager, attach the blackberry and thus it should just detect the new software and press 'update now'.
My desktop manager is not 'detecting' the new operating system.
I have tried uninstalling desktop manager 5.0, tried using version 4.6 and still no luck.
can anyone help?
I can get to step 4 of the link below:

I have looked into the 'crackmem' program, but it looks very complicated.
Thanks

After you downloaded the new OS, did you double-click the exe to install it on your PC? I recommend you follow the Upgrade/Downgrade procedure that's linked in my sig.

thanks for the advice Jeff.
I will try the upgrade/downgrade info and let you know how I get on tonight.
PS - how do I install the exe part of the download, as I have saved the file to my desktop. Sorry Im not too technology savvy! - 03-17-2010, 10:34 AM #4

Last night I tried a number of things to update my 8800 device software but with no success.
I attempted JeffH's advice and followed his upgrade/downgrade procedure, yet I cannot get my desktop manager (DM) to automatically find the update. I have run the exe file, then connected my device via usb, but the DM is not finding the update.
I am currently running v4.5.0.180 but won't to update to v4.5.0.187
Anyone have any help or advice, its driving me mad!
I have even uninstalled DM v5.0 and tried version 4.6, but that also didn't help. I'm not back running v5.0.
Thanks

If you look in the Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, do you see the OS as an application?

Hi Jeff, I have a vista powered laptop, so when I look in 'programs and features', the v4.5.0.187 OS is NOT there. is that the problem?
I have tried running the exe file as administrator but with no success. When the file runs, the only options I have is to "REMOVE or REPAIR blackberry device software v4.5.0 for blackberry 8800 smartphone". Please see the attached pdf for the screen shot.
I appreciate your advice.Last edited by rhys1927; 03-19-2010 at 02:27 AM. Reason: missing text

i have an update, I have found the file in the 'programs and features', have run the file as a new file, but still cannot locate the correct v4.5.0.187 file, I have chosen my location etc in the setup, yet when i connect to DM, it only finds my current OS and previous versions.
please see the attachment. - 03-19-2010, 06:56 PM #10
Your screen shot shows 5 previous OS versions. 4.5.0.187 would be the 6th. When you look in the installed programs list, do you see 6 OS entries plus DM? I'm still not sure 4.5.0.187 is installed, based on your screen shots.

when i look in the installed programs list, none of the OS are there, just a program called "blackberry device software v4.5.0 for the blackberry 8800 smartphone".

Is this the file that you downloaded from RIM: 8800M_PBr4.5.0_rel312_PL2.7.0.109_A4.5.0.187_O2_UK .exe? Can you see this file on your desktop? When you double-click this file name, what happens?

Jeff,
I have now upgraded to a storm 2, so that saved my issue on the 8800.
But I have found the solution on the link below:
Why won't my OS update? I deleted the Vendor.xml file! - BlackBerryForums.com : Your Number One BlackBerry Community
thanks for all your help. - 03-26-2010, 07:02 PM #14
Thank you for posting that solution. Getting around the automatic update problem is the reason the upgrade procedures recommend either disconnecting from the internet or using loader.exe instead. I'm sorry I didn't think of it earlier, but I'm glad you found it.
