It usually is a hidden vendor file if the new OS doesn't show up.

You've got nothing to worry about using that OS. It's still official RIM software, just not with Virgin... but they'll never know

The latest official OS versions are always 'stickied' at the top of each individual device forum.

The 8520/8530 Forum is here

It might also be worth checking out the Leaked/Beta OS Forum here every once in a while, to see if there's a newer leaked OS for your device.
