Default 8220 os on an 8520?

I just got off a chat with my carrier. They replaced my phone after the whole 5.0 sound issue. So I'm back to 4.6.

I just talked with them to see if they have 4.6 still available for download in case things go awry again if I upgrade to 4.6. The lady I was chatting with said that I could download and install the 4.6 for the 8220 and run that on my 8520.

Is that true?

No you can't... You'll end up with an expensive paperweight, but it probably wouldn't even attempt to load the 8220 software. Good job asking here before you tried though...

Lovely! I started thinking about it, and thought it sounded kind of off. So I called customer care and asked for the Blackberry department and they told me the same thing, that I could load that software onto my 8520 as well.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

It will not work. The hardware and screen resolution on a Pearl Flip are completely different from that of the 8520.

That is what I thought. I am still scratching my head over it. I have saved the chat and I verified with the person I spoke to that they think that will work. I have an 8220 and I see that they are radically different BlackBerries. I even asked them about the screen resolution. They insist it will work.

I think I'll call again.

Normally, I'm comfortable tinkering with my BlackBerry. For some reason having that sound issue makes me feel really nervous about messing with anything. Yesterday I spent the day waiting for calls because my grandpa wasn't expected to live much longer and I needed to help my brother in the Army find a flight to get him home in time for a funeral. I missed two calls from my brother and two from my mom because they never even rang.

ETA: Here's the chat. I edited it because it has my full name in it.

Quote:
Tmo: You can choose to install the software for the Blackberry 8220 as it is 4.6 in your desktop manager to change the software back to 4.6.
Me: Aaah. And the BB8220 software will work fine on an 8520 even with different screen resolutions?
Tmo: That is correct as it is just the operating system.
Me : Okay, fantastic. So I would be fine to upgrade my 8520 to the 5.0.0.822 that is available through Tmobile. If the sound issues happen again, I can download 4.6 from the 8220 via Tmobile and downgrade my os to that one. Is that correct?
Tmo: That is correct.
Tmo: If the issue is not resolved the we can look into an exchange. I am not showing any known issues with the 8520 software update.

Wow. Just called again and they are saying the same thing.

Wondering if I just risk it and if it goes bad again we replace the device. Again.

I don't want to do that though...

I would not risk it. It guarantees your 8520 will malfunction. Stick with OSes for your specific device.

I agree, Laura. It just feels too risky. I mean, if any Os works on any BlackBerry, why aren't we all running the exact same build?

Their advice just stuns me.

Well, dunno why they'd think it's Ok, it is a well known fact that OSes are device specific. An 8220 OS isn't gonna work on an 8520, period. The Pearl flip has code the Curve 2 doesn't. What a doof.

Finally got someone who said that I should never attempt that. LOL!

Good thing I didn't!

I'm going to go to .681 and call it a day.
