If all design and development of hardware is now outsourced. Doesn't it also mean the PKB is dead?

The whole point of TCL, alcatel and dtek is to mass manufacturer the same phone and then launch it under several brands.

I don't see blackberry allowing TCL and alcatel to sell their patented PKB nor would they want to either.

It certainly is heading that way. Anything could happen though, but the niche of PKB seems to be a thing of the past.

Perhaps the pkb device with be built by their Indonesian partner. Perhaps it is ALREADY designed.

As I wrote in the live chat, BlackBerry has a repository full of designs. Who's to say they cannot pass one along?

The 3 permanent touch buttons are silly. Makes the whole device taller than it should be.

It should be like the priv or dtek

I think he means having them fixed, with the triangle, circle and square silkscreened on the glass as opposed to virtual like on the Priv.

Who cares who makes and sells the PKB at this point? BlackBerry is giving up on manufacturing anyway. We're betrayed.

Yup, why even add permanent physical buttons? ruins the look. And it looks as though Nougat has redesigned the look anyway. I just don't understand the logic.

The problem I see with outsourcing the phones is that more than likely there will not be a model that works with Verizon's cdma network. Basically blackberry branded devices will be gsm phones only.

Before anyone asks, I am not switching carriers because Verizon has the best coverage with regard to my travels, my location, and my family. No point in having a phone with limited or zero coverage.

    Lol wot?

You know that android can have those buttons (back, home and recent apps) on screen instead of permanent right?

    From the earnings call:

Quite a bit. We really have not outsourced all our development- hardware environment, handset development effort. We are taking one or two products [DTEK50/DTEK60?] outsource it to others, but we've been developing our own handset also [Mercury].

So what I announced today, we will end that activity and rely completely on partners

It's went to an unmarked grave.

Explain why you can see the (back, home and recent apps) buttons on this screen shot.

It's because it's virtual and not permanent! Much wow!
