I think most people do not even expect an OS update ever. They buy a phone (any phone) as is and expect it to work as is for the duration of the device. The only certain OS updates happen on iPhone and as you said Nexus devices and the Pixel now. It is what it is.

Isn't it funny how a phone will work fantastic one day, then it's an utter pile of crap the next simply because someone released something else somewhere in the world.

I can only imagine how these people handle owning cars. Badly, no doubt.

Getting a build that runs, enables the hardware, and doesn't crash is hard enough, but doesn't take too terribly long. But then testing every feature, finding every little thing that doesn't work, tracking down the source of those bugs and fixing them, and then optimizing everything to minimize power, maximize the hardware, etc. can take months - and that's for a single phone model. When you've got 10 models (or, if you're Samsung, and you have 50 that are less than 2 years old), then, yeah, it takes a long time. And if you're BB, and you only have a small team working on it, then it also takes longer, despite having fewer models to support.

Remember too that they have to test the sub-models differently in many cases, as they often have different hardware besides just the radios...

Do you know if TCL will be directly responsible for the Keyone updates, kind of like samsung or LG getting it from Google and doing their own thing, or will they come directly from blackberry?

I don't mean to take this thread off-topic, but why do so many Android manufacturers have a difficult time updating their hardware?

It seems like a lot of manufacturers have talked a good game about updates, then totally bail on the commitment. Is the OS that difficult to update? Is it a massive pain to do? Does it take an exceptionally large amount of resources to do?
Because there is so little money in Android.... and it's not that big of a deal to most consumers.

BlackBerry is a software company that like Samsung and LG builds their own apps and version of Android. They have licensed it to TCL to use in manufacturing phones, but there's no reason to expect that BlackBerry would not continue to distribute their own Android OS updates.
