Been trying to use Google Drive for backups but no go - shows "no connection" and I have not yet located a solution.

I see there are many in the playstore ie. Backup and restore, super backup and restore. Haven't used any yet just manually backing up files to a hard drive

I have used Titanium Backup from the play store for a few years and seems to work fine for backing up apps and restoring them. You can also freeze apps which can be handy sometimes instead of uninstalling them.

Titanium Backup requires root access and you won't get it on a BlackBerry device

If you just quickly scan the descriptions of some of these apps you may get the impression that you can really backup an app. In actual fact all you are doing is saving the APK file. Useful if you want to restore an older version of an App, or possibly conserve bandwidth when doing a factory reset / setting up a new device. It won't help however if you want to restore the data and Settings contained in an App.
