Not sure how much truth to this, but...

“DTEK stands for detection and the application monitors and detects active security threats and acts as a detective and is a play on that. We expect to continue this story moving forward and is a bit of a shoutout to our history with the Z10, Z30, and now we have the DTEK50,” says Wenger.
Here's how the BlackBerry DTEK50 got its name | MobileSyrup.com

So there you have it. DTEK50 is the Z10/Z30 successor.

Might be confused with a BB10 device though.

It's a very brash name for a product, but BlackBerry is naming it after the app, standing by the core mission of the security hardening in the Android space which DTEK happens to be the primary UI to. Takes balls to call a phone "DTEK", but it's just a name. Won't mean squat if sales don't pull through.

Intrusion detection is going to be huge even in the layman's world, and BlackBerry are pioneers in the Android space to feature such features. They might stop making handsets, but they'll keep making OSes more secure in some fashion or another, and I'll continue to take BB's solution as it is applicable to me, and so should anyone else.

Maybe, but the more I think about it, the more I think dtek is an important part of BlackBerry Android's branding. At least it means something.

The name is so true to the mission's focus that one logically has to like it eventually. Brilliant!

I read somewhere that the 50 came from a survey they've done, in which they found that around half of the people they interviewed thought their phones are secure.. I'll update the post when I find the source.

This phone is simply called dtek50 right?

    Not the BlackBerry dtek50?

If so it makes perfect sense.

When I spoke to Blackberry about the phone last week, they highlighted the T in DTEK on the box is green, to highlight T for TOUCH.

Presumably they could also highlight K for KEYBOARD - so I wonder if the next phone will be called DTEK too?

Priv has DTEK app. Future BB Android phones, if any, will presumably carry DTEK too. Would that be confusing? Like someone may think a high end DTEK loaded BlackBerry as this mid range DTEK 50?

They might pull a Johan de Nysschen and rename the Priv to DTEK90.

If it would be named after an acquisition, it would be Good50 or AtHoc50.

I was going more for the 'naming after an app' theme.
