So I need to send in my dtek50 for repairs and pretty certain they will just replace it. What's the best way to perform a backup before I factory reset it?

I'd manually copy over any data I wanted.

Then go into setting and look for the backup feature... make sure your Google account into is there and that the backup feature it on. Then before sending it in, wipe the phone (factory reset)...

Is there a way to backup contacts like BlackBerry desktop used to do?

Just sync contacts and calendar events with an online account such as Gmail. Also don't forget to export Password Keeper and save a copy.
