best OS version to date??
Hey all. Im a newbie to Crackberry. Currently using a Curve 9360 with company OS v7.0.0.319 pre installed. Good buy and no regrets, except i've been facing the regular battery drain issues like everyone else. Switched mode to 2G (EDGE), location OFF, brightness at 10%, and autolock in 10 seconds but still needs to be charged 2-3 times a day. Had been waiting for the official OS update to be released in India, but just heard it will take almost a year. Tired of waiting, so i've finally decided to take the jump to making an OS upgrade myself. Can you help me out with the latest/best OS version to date in terms of battery life? And if any higher capacity replacement batteries available that are worth trying out? would be grateful for some guidance here. Many thanks.

i have had one for 4 months now upgrade to 7.1.0.336 seems to be the best so far but i still say the battery is not good enough for this device.. i purchased a 1500 mah battery and still not happy with it. im not a big time user ..twitter facebook emails a little bit of all of these and some texting and the odd phone call and i still have to charge it every 1 to 2 days the battery i think will always be a problem.
hope rim will read these postings and see most of the people that own these are having the same issue.
Good Luck with your device

Thanks for the prompt reply. Okay, so that means the one from Telenor Norway, right? Can you tell me how to go about it? What will i stand to lose in terms of data and apps? Does the device get wiped clean? And how do i go about making a backup of all that's necessary?
And where did you manage to find a 1500mAh battery? I've looked most places for one because i thought it seemed like just the right capacity to last me through the day, based on my usage. I think i can live with charging it once a day.
PS- Had been facing issues with my Media card not being detected as well, but managed to get it read on USB mode and retrieved the data before formatting it last night. So far so good. Could this have been related to the OS build in any way? - 05-02-2012, 07:54 AM #4
you need to download device manager: BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop Software and select at the left hand side windows or mac
download it and connect your bb to it and then click back up data, im not sure about the american version but the UK version automatically saved all my info including messages and 3rd party (from appworld) apps. the only thing it didnt do was remember the info i set on my 3rd party apps like login details or the password for my app lock so i just had to refill those in again.
then download the newest OS from telenor norway, 3uk or o2: https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/D...B73B97E1AAA491 thats for 02, i personally used 3uk but theyve changed the link for it and i cant be bothered to find the new one
when i connected my 9360 to the desktop software after my backup i went on apps to make sure theyd saved and it prompted me that i could upgrade to the newest OS without me even having to open the downloaded os in my documents so i clicked ok and it connected - wiped everything - rebooted - loaded new OS - rebooted - loaded all my applications and info back on the device - told me to eject it as its complete
it might be different for you though: http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101...ting-system-os - 05-02-2012, 08:08 AM

Many thanks. I've already downloaded the Blackberry Desktop Software from the site earlier. Need to connect and take a back up before i go any further. I made a note of the various passwords i use on different apps so refilling my info shouldn't pose too much of a problem. One question though, I'm 6 months into my 18 month warranty period, so does upgrading to an OS from a different carrier void my warranty? If so, can i downgrade back down to the shipped OS if I face any problems? (God Forbid)
I've followed most of what you instructed, but I didn't see anything to do with the dreaded Vendor.xml files that need to be deleted and that have caused so much grief to those before me. (Im on Windows XP fyi)
Going to do a bit more research before finally taking the plunge. Any further tips/suggestions, anybody?? - 05-02-2012, 08:27 AM #6
im no expert but when i did the above i didnt get prompted for anything it wiped my old os and reloaded the new one flawlessly without having to delete the vendor file and no problems since.
again im not sure about all service providers but i rang my service provider beforehand as i was worried about the same thing lol (3UK) and they said it doesnt void the warranty as it was official RIM software not a dodgey one made by an individual although housing change would void it for me
you can definately downgrade again but i think its kinda complicated if your phone gets stuck or nuked to downgrade it again but theres a few guides on here of how to reload the os if it does freeze or nuke

You don`t need DM to upgrade OS what system are you on?
If you use DM in most cases your carrier does not have an upgrade for your device Yet just like mine did not have it kept mentioning no OS upgrade available.ROGERS Canada
I did it the other way..
Just to give you an idea
Windows XP instructions
first delete all other versions of OS7 from you PC
Now load the OS7.1.0.336 when it finished you will see run app loader
DONT close it..
Start button click right Explore
click Program files
click common files
click research in motion folder
now click app loader and delete the XML Vendor file located at the bottom of that list.
Plug device into PC and now click app loader again and run..
I have loaded 3 9360s so far this way all Rogers branded locked and all 3 are running the OS7.1.0.336
Good Luck

@blackberry9360user- Thanks a ton mate. Will go through all of what you've sent me. Though i seriously hope it doesn't come down to that. Sounds like pretty heavy stuff. Cheers!
@PALeafs67- Umm. Okay, if i've got you right, i can upgrade the OS working around the Download Manager, but i will need it to back up all my data won't I? And also presumably to restore all of the backed up data once im done with the upgrade. Or is there a simpler way to that too?? Will go through all of what you've written again, sleep on it and go for it tomorrow. Too late today already. Will let you know if anything else comes up. Thanks - 05-02-2012, 07:21 PM #9
Its always wise to backup via DM and add what you think you might need later but i never had a problem with the loss of any apps when i upgraded .even when you finish what i sent you everything you have added should show up as added items you just tick off what you don`t want and a way you go..

@PALeafs67- I don't want to seem like i'm getting ahead of myself, but i've also heard and read about shrinking the OS for more user memory allocation. What is the procedure like and what are its benefits?? Is it something essential or should i put it off for later when i'm more well versed with the whole routine?? Thanks. All set and ready to go. Fingers crossed.
@jeffrey1027- Hmm. I guess it varies from person to person. No offense, will have to go with public consensus this time. If it turns out bad, will definitely try .258 next. Till then, wish me luck! - 05-03-2012, 12:10 PM #12
This device has a 512 mb on board loads of memory... i myself have about 12 extra apps added and still show 151.4mb on device left still loads..and is running very smooth .
like i mentioned i just wished the battery was better this device would be top notch then.
You will get to pick what you want and don`t need when its time to load the new OS7.1
Items that are necessary will be checked and items that are all ready on your device will stay.its up to you what you want to keep...
Good Luck

Yeah i know. The on board RAM and ROM were what attracted me to this model in the first place. Quite a bargain. But funnily enough, to begin with, my Application Storage showed a free space of 121.4MB, and after installing a few apps (hardly 15), it has dwindled down to 88MB as of today. Has slowed down my handset considerably and left a lot to be desired in terms of storage space. I wish that improves with OS7.1 atleast.
