9220 users wont probably need 3G support. Their main goal is social networking (BBM, facebook, twitter, etc.)
If they need 3G, before the summer curve 9320 will come out. Curve 9320= 9220 + 3G -

Curve 8520 is the most best selling BB phones in most 3rd world country, like Indonesia.
And it doesn't have 3G.
Curve 9220 is just like the old Curve 8520, but with better OS, spec, and FM Radio.
All in a same price with Curve 8520 for now. So, why not?Phone history:Ericsson T20s > T28s > T29s > T39m > Sony Ericsson K508i > K640i > BlackBerry Curve 8330 > Bold 9650> Galaxy Nexus
& Bold 9900

Hi. I'm from one of these "emerging markets" and to tell you the truth, we actually don't mind. I'm actually embarrassed to admit it, but most of the citizens of my country don't even understand what 3g is. What we know is there's a signal, if there's a signal we can call or text, if there isn't then we can't.
As for browsing, most of the ordinary consumers don't use 3g browsing, but instead rely on wifi areas whenever browsing through their mobile phones. Our cost of living makes unlimited data plans seem expensive so only the wealthy ones can afford it. I myself don't have a data plan, but I have this special data plan for BBM only which costs like 2 dollars a month.
We are actually grateful that RIM makes this 9220 and 9320 because it allows us citizens of these "emerging markets" to experience BBM and owning a BB Phones. Also, these phones were made for us and not for consumers in the UK and in the US since your cost of living allows you to buy the better BB phone models like the Torch and Bold (such fact makes me jealous). As far as I know, we're happy with this BB Phone. Because of the 8520 and 9220's existence and the unli-BBM promo, BBM users are spreading like wildfire, which is good. Just my two cents on this matter. =)Thanked by:DavidsonLee (06-02-2012)

9320 has 3g and that is what is being launched in most markets. Having said that, RIM still ship tons of 8520s and that has no 3g functionality. The 8520 was one of my favourite ever BB devices, it felt great in the hand and I missed it a lot when I went up to a 9900.
Most users of these phones are getting them for BBM/FB/Twitter and texting at a reasonable cost. I've just picked up one of these for £130 in the UK to tide me over until BB10 and I think its a fantastic little device. Great battery, all the apps I need, light and small - I haven't touched my iPhone 4s since I got the new Berry.Last edited by RightyTightyLeftyLoosey; 06-02-2012 at 04:57 AM.

The 9220 doesn't have 3G but the 9320 has, if I'm not mistaken. It's a good phone overall and it doesn't really have BIG flaws. It's a good package for the price (considering that it's a BlackBerry). It's meant for emerging markets. Emerging markets, meaning that the people in that section of the market have yet to own their own smartphone, and the 9220 or the 9320 is there to address that.
I don't blame RIM for not putting 3G on the phone because for the less techie guys and gals, they might not even be familiar with 3G. They might not even know what GPRS or EDGE is.
And lastly, it's not a fail... I've been seeing people getting mad or outraged that this phone has been released in the first place and frankly, it kinda ticks me off. It's a phone that has lower specs, and therefore a lower price. RIM doesn't expect this phone to land in the pockets of executives. They expect it to land in the majority of the people in the world, as the main hook is its low price. So don't complain because the people in the "emerging markets" would most likely value things that they own more.BlackBerry is my phone of choice. No other phone gives me the same experience that BlackBerry does . - 06-02-2012, 06:19 AM #13

So let me get this straight OP, it's RIM's fault that they make a low end phone without 3g so consumers can afford the experience of a BlackBerry device, however they also make several devices that supports 3g.......hummm, you must be a "rocket scientist"

Well, I'm in Canada and most people here don't understand it either. In fact your statement pretty much describes the situation over here perfectly.but most of the citizens of my country don't even understand what 3g is. I like my new 9320. It out performs my 9700 except in screen quality.
Whatever the 9320 can't do, my PlayBook will.
Next stop, BB10

I own a 9320 (I don't use it, I already have a 9780 I'm happy with so I'm going to sell the 9320) and it has 3G. I didn't even know there was a 9220. I thought the 9320 was as cheap as it gets. For a phone as cheap as the 9220 you can't complain about much. It delivers. The 9320 is even better. I remember when I had my older Bolds (9000 & 9700) and didn't like the Curve models because didn't have 3G, camera flash or GPS, now they do. I'm thoroughly impressed.
