is it worth upgrading from 4.6 to 5.0?
What are the differences?

Many. It's the next evolution of the BB OS. it's very stable. I like it.

It sure is worth it. I was considering it yesterday as well...read through a lot of the posts on the 5.0 OS thread and people complaining about issues and really wasn't sure...but took the plunge anyways...and it's definitely worth it.
I immediately noticed a more responsive system...they updated the media player...the internet seems to load pages faster...better themes for 5.0...files seem to load much faster (like pics and video's), and I've seen improved battery life even after 1 day.
It only took me about 35 minutes to upgrade...go for it man...you'll be glad you did. - 03-19-2010, 09:08 PM #4
It's worth it
Hi,
Most people with 4.6 Firmware will have a lot of consideration of upgrading it to 5.0, but if you have your full backup and follow the instruction carefully, you don't have to worry. It's a whole lot better with OS 5.0.

This is tempting. I find my BB works awesome, so why fix it if it ain't broke? But from the sounds of it, there's so much potential... I'll have to read the tutorial again and perhaps take the plunge?

Don't think of it as fixing it, just improving it
I love the way the SMS is now, much easier to find texts from an earlier time. Media is better, browser is a little bit touched up, and the compatible Opera Mini is awesome. Try it, but be sure to backup your device first

No doubt, it is worth it. However, you need to make sure that all apps that you need the most will work with no issue on OS 5.0.
I upgraded to Adamlau .545 hybrid with my own small tweak so that I can use East Asain inputs. I fall in love with my old 8900 again.
It is more responsive overall, browser is way faster, SMS thread style (if you like it), trackball is working way better. No more sticky trackball moving up/down/left/right. Also, my bootup time as well as free memory are improved. Last but not least, theme build for OS 5.0 is better than OS 4.6.

when i updated my os to 5 i couldn't register my bis with my network provider. it was utterly useless... i couldn't get a GPRS/EDGE signal. i wasted a day's worth of data plan.
that's why i reverted back to 4.6. and everything was back to normal. - 03-22-2010, 08:26 PM #11
Don't let this person ^ scare you. Just try it out. You can always revert back to your old OS and settings (just make sure you backup before upgrading). Provided that it all works out for you, and it very likely will, you will undoubtedly be very happy with the upgrade.

i agree. the upgrade is totally worth it. of cos make sure you back up all your 3rd party apps and in phone stuff you wanna save.
it took me less than 30mins to upgrade mine too. i upgraded both my bf's and mine within the same afternoon and both of us love it. neither of us regret upgraded!
(.461 btw, standby key still works!) - 03-22-2010, 09:19 PM #14

Thank you all
I upgraded to 5.0.0.411 since I want the keyboard lock as it was on 4.6 and I don't have any complains about the OS, just the problems with sms but I found a fix for that on this site.

1. install the os on your pc
2. go to program files, common files, research in motion, apploader
3. delete .xml file and disconnect from internet
4. in that same folder (apploader) double click loader.exe
follow the on screen instructions...if you have average/intermediate computer skills you will be ok...
its better to read the complete instructions but I know when I first read them I thought it was a little overwhelming because there is a lot of info thrown at you...but the instructions above is basically all you do...very simple! good luck!

I was nervous about upgrading too, but I am so glad I did. As someone said, you can always downgrade if you backup everything and you don't like it.
