Default Wi-Fi Problem!

Hey guys,

I'm having some trouble with my 8900's Wifi. I don't have a data plan so when I'm browsing the web through Wifi, I always have my mobile network disconnected to avoid data charges. So here's the problem: the phone connects automatically and I'm browsing along fine until I stop for a while. Say, I put my phone down and come back in a couple of minutes, the internet won't work when I go to browse the web. It will display "requesting" for a while and then tell me it has failed. Meanwhile the phone remains connected to the router. In fact, while it's requesting, I see a few flashes or "arrows" beside the Wifi symbol meaning it's still communicating with the router.

To fix this, all I have to do is go back into manage connections and disable and enable Wifi. After connecting again, the internet works perfectly until I pause again. Although this works, you can imagine how annoying it is for my to have to disable and enable my Wifi every time I stop browsing.

So does anyone know why this is happening? And how can I fix it? I've read about someone else having the same problem on another forum but no one there seemed to know a fix. Is anyone here experiencing the same problem or know of a solution? I'm using the v4.6.1.109 OS if that means anything. I know it's outdated and will be upgrading it promptly after receiving the USB cable I recently ordered. Do you think this is an issue with the OS I'm using?

P.S. Is there a way for my to always have my Mobile Network (phone enabled) but only browse through my Wifi? Having to disable my phone network every time I want to browse the internet is very annoying...

Thanks in advance.

Make sure your Browser settings are all set to Hotspot

Browser > BB Button > Options > Browser Configuration > Browser = Hotspot

and

Browser > BB Button > Options > General Settings > Browser = Hotspot

Also check out the WiFi Guide link in my signature.

If you don't have the BIS plan or BES plan (or t-zones) you shouldnt be able to use the browswer through data. It should run through wifi the whole time. Make sure your browser shows hotspot browser....to do this go into your broswer menu --> options --> change first top option to "browser: hotspot browser"

Wow. Thanks guys! My browser was originally set to "Rogers Mall". I think this fixed the problem.

BTW, what's a BIS or BES plan? Blackberry plans? I have a normal Rogers cellphone plan. And I'm pretty sure I can use data through the browser because I've been charged a few times before when I forgot to disconnect my mobile network.

However, will this change now that I'm not longer on the "Rogers Mall" browser? Does the "Hotspot" browser only operate on Wifi? So can I leave my mobile network enabled and not get charged?

Thanks!

Hotspot is only for WiFi. Keep it on that and you will be getting Internet data through the WiFi connection and not through your cellular network. "Rogers Mall" uses the APN settings, which is a limited Internet connection and since you don't have a data plan, you were being charged per the data you downloaded this way. Just keep it on Hotspot and you will be good to go.

P.S. You can also press the U button in the browser to view the status bar at the top of the of the browser. This will tell you how you are receiving data. In your case, make sure it says WiFi.

Unfortunately, the WiFi problem still exists... even with the HotSpot browser enabled. After leaving my browsing session for a few minutes, it stalls on "Requesting" when I try to load a page. It then prompts me with "Unable to find the requested server."

I guess I should just wait for my USB cable to arrive and upgrade the firmware. Wish me luck.

It may very well be the firmware. Also, you may need to unplug your routher and modem to reset them occasionaly. Usually that can turn out to be the problem. A router reset can work wonders for your internet connection. Furthermore, in the same fashion a battery pull (reset) can work wonders on your blackberry. Have you tried the latter yet?
