    Default what is vendor.xml ?

what is vendor.xml, does it just contain information about the service provider or a lot more than that. While doing and OS upgrade could you put your own service providers vendor.xml in place of the one that gets installed?

Just delete it. Then you can install any OS on any BB. The vendor.xml file just flag the OS you installed on your PC as being for one particular carriers BB. Then desktop manager compares them when you plug your BB in. But if vendor.xml is missing desktop manager just allows the OS to install on any BB that is the correct model.

Vendor.xml is a text file that is distributed with most OSs and it defines which OS variants may be installed on which phones from which carriers.

This file would stop, for instance, OS 4.6.1.200 (ficticious) being installed on a phone from carrier Zyz that had released OS 4.6.1.175 (also ficticious) . It would also stop you from installing OS 4.6.1.180 (equally ficticious) On you phone from carrier Xyz whaere the OS had come from carrier Abc.

Removing this file removes the restriction thus enabling you to install any 8900 OS on your 8900 phone. Simple really - once you know.

If you use CrackMem (from the link on my signatue - free) It will make removal much easier.

Like I said in my post, you can download and use my free program CrackMem from the link in my signature and that will handle it for you. CrackMem has been downloaded over 6500 times by CrackBerry members. It works well but you really must read the Help text..

There are two reasons why not deleting Vendor.xml still allows an OS install to proceed.

    - The OS was obtained from your carrier and is thus valid for your phone

    - The OS in question was/is a beta OS and most of these (not all for some reason) seem to install on all phone hardware that is valid for that OS i.e. 8900 OS on any 8900 phone.

It is best to delet this file as if you do not you end up scratching your head because sometimes the OS will not install and lat time it did.

I know that I keep plugging this but CrackMem was written to manage this process and, it's free.
