V5.0 for 8900
Yesterday when I plugged my 8900 into my work computer I recieved a notification to upgrade to the official v5.0 software so I did it and I am very happy with it. When I got home I tried to do it for my wife's 8900 and did not recieve the option. I also looked on blackberyr.com which re directed me to my carrier's site and the software is not available there either. Does anyone know anything about this? How else can I get the official v5.0 for my wife's phone? Also I have not seen any posts on CB about the release of this software.
ThanksJ

I dont think there is an official 5.0 for the 8900 although I have received the same notification of the upgrade. I downloaded the 5.0 from crackberry. Should be able to find it somewhere here.

I have the file on my work desktop so I guess I can take it home on a memory stick and load it that way. Is there a way I can post the file to this thread for all to see?

Tell us the exact name of the file. Also, right click properties. Tell us version/vendor details. I'm gonna go make some popcorn.

Ok, if its an old beta or a beta period why would the BB desktop 5.0 prompt me to make the switch? Thats the only reason I went along with it.

It's still your choice on whether you want to update or not... don't blame RIM... plus this is also something that your Provider (AT&T) does.

Sounds like.....
You said this happened on a PC at work...Is it possible that someone else could have installed 5.0 on the computer, in order to upgrade their own device software?...Hence when you plugged your device into that PC, desktop manager recognizes that your device has older 4.6.1 software compared to what the 5.0 that was probably previously installed on the PC, and therefore prompts you to update....??
It wouldn't have shown any updates on the pc at home, because you likely did not have the 5.0 device software installed on the pc at home...
In my experience, if you plug your device into a machine and desktop manager prompts you to update device software, more often than not, it is because there is a newer version of the software already installed on that PC. Desktop Manager recognizes that the newer OS applies to your device, and prompts you to update.....Last edited by mnokia; 12-02-2009 at 08:52 AM.

No its not possible becuase I am the only one that uses this PC.
Thanks everyone for the info/help you are providing. So far I dont note any issues with the device so I will just ride it and see what happens. And I guess I will hold off on doing anything to my wife's phone until we get the prompt on it to upgrade.J

Is your Blackberry part of an Entrprise (BES) system?
I'm curious to know if your Blackberry is part of an Enterprise system or not. If it is and they are migrating your blackberry to 5.0 before the official release I would ask why and how? Granted I know nothing about the licencing for Beta software but I don't think RIM is in the habit of allowing companies to run their beta software in an operational environment. If they aren't migrating and this was done by someone else I know that if someone updated their phone without the approval of the IM/IT people in my organization they may find themselves without a Blackberry for a little while.
I'm not asking for company names, but have you talked to your IT people about this? Do your systems at work allow non-administrators to install programs? - 12-03-2009, 12:54 PM #18
The same thing happened to me not too long ago. I was excited to install it because I thought it was finally official. But long behold, it's just a beta that the Desktop Manager provided. I had no problems with that OS except that some of the apps I use didn't work. I quickly downgraded to the old 4.6 OS and I was wondering what that OS was. I think I'm going to look for it and upgrade it again since it was so stable and nice. Thank you, jormab!

You can't push 5.0 with BES. Yet.

If you install it without downloading anything, the OS was installed on your computer, you can't download a 128MB files in a seconds. So do you dl something ? or the install began right away ?
