| | Skins: Silicon vs Plastic?
Which one is best for protecting the 8900...?
I would think the snap-on plastic would be best, but I don't want it to be really difficult to take off and then risk scratching the 8900.
So, any thoughts???

None of the above. Keep it in your pocket and be careful with it. If you can't avoid situations where you need to worry about dust, drops, water etc then buy an otterbox.

well...from what ive seen there arent any hard cases out yet for the 8900.
ive used the skin and hard plastic case before on my 8800. the skin is alrite, little "sticky" and hard to take outa your pocket. The plastic case is not bad, got pretty scratched up and made the phone look bad, but it did its job.
i think im gonna get a screen protector and just a skin until something nicer comes out for the 8900

I would suggest a screen protector and that's all. And here is why. My last phone was an 8310. I purchased the Seidio case to protect it, very nice case and I really have no complaints about it. I normally really try to baby my phone but in all honesty once you put a hard case on there you really feel like there is a shield around the phone and you get a little more relaxed with it. Also the hard case does add some size to your phone so that is something you will have to get used to. After about a year with the Seidio case (factoring in a drop here and there, replacing the memory card a few times, doing battery pulls) it wears down and doesn't really clamp together well so it was pretty much time to replace the case. Turns out for me that this coincided with the release of the 8900 (ok I'm still waiting for it - AT&T) and the end of the year so I purchased a new phone, the Bold. I gave my 8310 to my wife. I was going to get her a color hard case, also around $30 but she wanted the entire phone to be one color and didn't like the battery door to be a different color, black. Anyway. So she decided she wanted the phone to be all white. Low and behold I found out that you can replace the entire phone housing for $40. I ended up going this route. I also made a decision at that time that I will not purchase another hard case for my future phones. If the phone gets messed up, I will just replace the entire housing because the little extra you pay to do so, in my opinion, is well worth it.
Here's one man's experience and opinion, take it for what it's worth. Probably nothing! |

I think the rubber cases absorb impact while the hard cases just transfer shock. I protect my BB's with soft cases and screen protectors. I also like to use zagg invisishield skins, I tend to take off the rubber cases for weekend use to be able to easily slip the phone in my pockets, as noted earlier the rubber cases can get "stuck" with traction in your pocket.

I have both a screen protector and a skin on my phone right now and I agree the skin can make it hard to take it out of the pocket, but I prefer it over the hard case. I looked at a few hard cases and they just looked a little too bulky. I am happy with my choice to use a skin and screen protector now. I will probably get a zagg invisishield skin when they release one for the 8900

Even though I had a "hard" case it was a "rubberized" hard case so that does bring a few benefits. For example when in my vehicle you can place the phone on more surfaces and not have to worry about it flying all over the place. In my case, I could always count on placing the phone on my pant leg while driving and not have to worry about the phone hitting the floorboard each time I pressed the brakes.

I have the Best Skins Ever on my 8330 and my wife's also. They work great, are cheap and I hear they have excellent service/replacement policy. I don't have problems taking it out of my pocket. I frequently demonstrate the protection by scratching the screen with something metallic, to no effect. It adds nearly 0 bulk to the phone. I mean, the major reason I went with a Curve was because it is RIM's smallest device with a full QWERTY keyboard. I don't want to kill one of the major reasons for getting the thing in the first place with bulky protection. The old BBs looked so strange when people used the phone. People really are hot for the Bold but it was still too big, which is why I drool over the new 8900. If it weren't for the non-3g, it might be the closest thing to perfection yet.
It works great for me, but if you are rough with phones you may need more.

Really don't like the hard plastic ones. Scratches the phone, looks really bad, just tranfers the impact and when you remove it you will be in shock for the amount of dirt you'll find!
