First off, Thank YOU so much for the condescending and belittling reply, I appreciate being spoken to like a child! Just because I'm new to owning a Blackberry doesn't mean I've never had a phone before.
When I push the button with the Blackberry logo just to the left of the trackball, the screen fills up with what can only be described as "icons"...little pictures meant to represent the functions of the device. One of them looks like the outline of a file folder with a box-end wrench inside it, when I run the selector over it the word "settings" appears along the bottom of the screen, when I select this folder, there is nothing inside to choose from, it's empty.
My carrier is AT&T but that's completely immaterial since the folder was empty before I put the sim card in, and AT&T didn't supply the device anyway.
I do have the proper service plan and even the gentleman at the AT&T phone store said the folder should not be empty. FYI: All the other folder icons have function icons inside them!
Software is "5.0 bundle 1728"
Also, I've recently discovered the camera does not respond when selected.
