Default New to Blackberry - Need help!

I was given a curve 8900 from a family friend. However, the phone was from Centennial Wireless. The phone was unlocked so I did not have any problems using it on AT&T's network. I wanted to upgrade the software to 5.0.0.1728 but I have a feeling because it was a Centennial Wireless phone, it will not allow me to. is that correct? Does that mean I have to delete everything on the phone and start fresh or is there a way to do it without formatting the phone? Thanks in advance!!

Before installing the new OS, back up the device, delete the vendor.xml file and you can install it on your device no problem.
You do know how to upgrade the OS, correct? Also, make sure you have the most recent version of Desktop Manager.
Note: OS = Operating System.

I'd personally wipe it with blackberry desktop manager and then fresh install the official carrier OS as opposed to doing an OTA upgrade. Kinda like a PC--- fresh installs are better. But FIRST use DM to backup. Once you install the new OS you can do a selective restore to put back just what is needed.
There is lots of info on this forum about this procedure.

No, unlocking the phone is not related to the OS that it's running.

just make a Backup as suggested - using the Blackberry Desktop application on your PC and then update your OS version.

Default Success!

Thanks everyone for their replies. I tried installing it based on the link. When I opened Desktop Manager, it didn't show up. So then, I opened AppLoader and it allowed me to update the software. It took about 25 minutes but it seems to be working fine without any problems. Again, thanks for the help.

Do you mean you're trying to remove the Vodafone image that pops up when the device starts?
You'll never get rid of that. It's on the device forever.

You unlock a phone with a code.
It's this whole process. Someone in the Unlocking section can gladly help you.
Because I'm not too informed about unlocking.
