Default Is my OS too old?

My Curve is currently running on 4.6.1.310. I have been experiencing crashes a lot lately, so I'm just wondering, is my OS considerd "too old" that could contribute to each crash?

I'm willing to bet a clean wipe would make 4.6.xxx run stable as any newer OS.
I'm still running it just fine.
