First Impressions: from the 8310 to the 8900
In lieu of the blog post today (review of AT&T 8900) I decided to post a thread of my initial reactions of switching from the 8310 to the 8900. Here we go:
[I had the 8310 for ATT for about 8 months. (I actually bought it used off of Craigslist). I just recieved my 8900 two days ago and here is what I've noticed thus far.]
- Right from the box this thing is a beauty! Nice contrast with the black on chrome. I've always liked the look of the 83xx's but this one screams 'touch me'
- The battery placement is nice, esp now you can access the memory card with out removing the battery. I still cannot remove the sim without removing the battery, but still an improvment over the 8310.
- The 8900 feels solid in my hand, it doesnt shift around or creak, yet somehow it manages to feel lighter. My only gripe is that the battery door is awfully loose. (I had to place a piece of masking tape on top of the little foam piece on the battery door, it is a little beveled now but solid)
I never had this problem with my 8310
- I have really bad eyes however this screen is simply a delight to look at lol. The screen is enough for me to never pick up my 8310 again. STUNNING!
- The key board is very similar to my 8310 but with some nice improvements. The printed letters/characters seem to be bigger, the keyboard as a whole doesn't wiggle at all (compared to the 8310 which would get me sea sick while writing long emails) They don't clack nearly as much as the 8310 and they feel like they are a tad cushy...not as hard...more along the lines of the bold keys.
- The track ball seems smoother to scroll and a little bit more responsive. It is recessed into the buttons, which I feel takes a bit of a learning curve to get used to) I have big fingers and felt more at home with the extra ball room....no pun intended!
- I'm currently running os 231, which came packaged stock with AT&T. It is nicer on the eyes compared the lastest 4.5 I had on the 8310, however not many ground breaking additions to get all nerdy over. Lets wait for a steady 5.0 then we'll talk.
- The camera is deff an added bonus. I never complained about the quality of my 8310, but this 3.2 megapixel is SHARP! But the real selling point is the auto focus, I have retired my digital camera for good as the 8900 is all I need now.
- As for the battery life, I decided to let it drain right from the box, then fully charge. This was on Friday, I finally charged it over night on Sunday after heavy use all weekend. A welcomed improvement over my daily charged 8310.
Well that is all I can attest to so far. To sum up the 8900 is most deff worth upgrading to from the 83xx. I know I had reservations about this, thinking that the difference were to few, but the new Curve blows it away. After playing with my 8900 all weekend, my old 8310 feels like a toy!
Well I hope this was helpful to anyone who is still on the fence about the 8900....BUY IT!!!!
