    Default A few q's about the 8900

    Hi all,

Right well i think ive finally managed to convince the missus to get a BB. At the moment i have the Bold myself and yesterday we had a look at some in a Vodafone shop here in the UK. Shes with Vodafone and im with Tmobile.

Now she really likes the look of the 8900 curve but its not a 3g phone which is a bit of a bummer but she had a play with my Bold and found it was a bit too big for her small hands.

Now does anyone know if Vodafone here in the UK support EDGE??...if so then great...GPRS is kinda slow and i know shes going to be complaining. So does anyone know....should have really asked yesterday but completely slipped my mind to ask. I know Tmobile here in the UK dont do EDGE...so the 8900 curve for them would only be on GPRS, which quite frankly is pretty slow.

Also does anyone know if BBalerts, Aerize or Peekawho work on the 8900 curve as well.

    Thanks.

I have not used Bold, but have used storm. Even with full 3G signal, it was slower then 8900. Depending on where you live and use the BB, it might be an idea to look at Orange because they offer full UMA.

I did try Vodafone 8900 and it only allows you to use the wifi to use the browser only whilst UMA allows you to do everything through a wireless router or a hotspot.

8900 has more RAM so it is faster and unlike other blackberries that have 2/3 internet lines (i do not know the technical term) it has 8, so it is fast.

Vodafone do have problems with their 3G and when the signal fluctuates between 2 and 3G, calls are dropped.

Hmmm ok thanks mate. So the Vodafone 8900 browser wont work unless you connect to a wifi network??...i find that hard to believe really...as for UMA??...what is that exactly??. This is for my GF whos kind of a technophobe with these things.

Just really need to know if those apps i mentioned above work on the 8900 or not.

No, you misunderstood me (because I wasnt clear). On VF, if you are connected to wifi, you can only use browser, nothing else. For example, if you were in a building or area where there was no phone signal but there was wifi access, VF will only allow you to browse the net, you will not be able to send or receive texts, e mails, calls etc.
If you were with Orange, you can do everything at the lightening speed even when you are in a no signal area, provided you can connect to a router or wifi. (I mention Orange because I am with them and know it works, I don't know if O2 or T Mobile have UMA)

Application wise, I do not use any of the ones you mentioned but I am sure someone else here will be able to let you know.

From what i've read and been told the 9000 on 3G is not much faster than the 8900 on EDGE. I know for a fact the 8900 smokes the 9000 and 9530 in a speed test on EDGE.
    Device history: 8100 > 8320 > 9000 (brief) > 9530 (Ugh!) & 8900 > 8220 > 8120 > 8520 > 9550
    > 9000 > 9700 9650

BB tech: Got a problem? Feel free to PM me.

Can you not go to O2....it uses EDGE and i find it really quick....I had the Bold but changed to the 8900 because of it's smaller form factor.
