Default Could this be the look of the 3G 9220?

While poking around at RIM's US Patents I found this illustration of a device patented in 2005. Revisions were made in the spring of this year. With an offset ear speaker it could remain roughly the size of the current 9200 (or 8900 or what ever the Javelin is this week) devices we've seen, and allow room for 3G components. Keep in mind this is pure speculation. I have no other information to base this guess upon.

There is not a chance in the world that RIM will release an asymmetrical device like that. It is a design nightmare.

I agree, but they went through the trouble of obtaining a patent for it for something.

Here are the patent illustrations for the 8200/KickStart. It was patented in the spring of '06, and is due for release any day. Using it as a time line the above device would be pretty near as well.

Not sure if that's just a mock keypad or suretype or what. A third generation Pearl with wi-fi and GPS? Who knows?

I would I hope that is never released. A bit homely and retro if you ask me.

Just because something is patented, doesn't mean it will ever make it to market. I have no idea about what percentage of patents ever come to fruition, but I'd guess it's in the single digits. Many people simply patent them hoping to license should anyone else want to use the same idea, others simply have good intentions but lack the means or the market to ever progress.

Just a thought, but could have been an early draft to the IDEN BB Curve that was just announced. With PTT, the large speaker would make sense. But I don't think this is anything RIM will be putting out in the market. There may have been some patents along with the form factor, ie the insides, that they kept and modified; therefore the spring revisions...

I agree. But go back and look at the sketches of the Kickstart/8220. Would you have ever believed THAT was a BlackBerry?

AND the fact that CX isn't calling this is an absurd theory, scares the **** out of me.

It seems 20 as in 8120, and 8320 is a wifi designation. And 30 as in 8130 and 9530 is a cdma evdo designation. So what does 10 designate and what does that say about this 9220? 3G and wifi I guess? On a flip Pearl? If the non 3G hav gets an 8900 number, wouldn't a 3G jav have a 9900? Just trying logic.
