Can not access my wi fi connection

my blackberry is displaying that it has picked up the local wi fi but i can not connect to the wi fi network to browse the internet

I assume you probably don't have a data plan? If that's the case, you need to go to your browser, menu>options>browser configuration, and change the browser from your carrier to "hotspot browser"
